Sovu is a village outside of the city of Maraba in Rwanda’s South. It’s a high-altitude, mountainous area with volcanic soil– perfect for coffee. Farmers hand pick their crop then carry it to the washing station in baskets woven from banana leaf. It’s then rigorously sorted, dried, and hulled. Rejected coffee is then returned to the farmers, who are able to sell it on lower quality markets or use it as fertiliser.
The Sovu washing station is one of four washing stations in the Maraba Coffee Cooperative. 220 farmers formed this co-operative in 1999 to sell directly to exporters, and so retain more of the profit from their coffee locally. Farmers earn more, and have access to a growing community fund that provides credit and risk-sharing.
This is an incredibly charming coffee, and we invite you to enjoy it with us.
